Visitors: My apologies.
This is a Really Big File. But such is the price of being comprehensive.
While I could break it up into smaller files, I prefer the Brute Force method
of display so my browser FIND function will locate a listing in case I forget
where I put it. I will investigate a Javascript search function, but for now,
I hope you have a fast connection.

Sometimes you want goods
or services, but you just don't know where to go to find them. To help alleviate
this problem, both for you and myself, I have tried to categorize things here
to help you find things photographic. There are a lot of things here that are
not in the alphabetical list, mainly because the referenced site is not a household
word (photographically speaking), but it may be useful if you are looking for
a specific item. There is also a lot of redundancy here, but it all makes for
easier searches for finding exactly what you are looking for. For instance,
Adobe is listed, as well as some of the major photographic-related software
that Adobe has crafted. Finally, there are a lot of references to web creation
items, as well as motion picture and video resources which I have found to be
useful, or I think it might become useful in the future.
This list is maintained
in alphabetical categorical order, and then again alphabetically in each
category. If you know the company you are looking for, you will probably find
the alphabetical list a much quicker resource.
This list is my computer
file source for my personal use. I find it much easier to use than the "favorites"
list in my browser. You are welcome to use it. Please note that I cannot vouch
for anything on this page, except that it linked as my notations indicate on
the day I posted it. I do not check for broken links nor to see if the anything
has changed, unless I look there again for something I need. Some site developers
seem to change things at whim and I can't be responsible for their actions.
So if ANYTHING seems inappropriate, send a note to the Webmaster
and I will change or eliminate the link. Particularly obnoxious to me would
be any kind of solicitation effort on the part of any site. These links, when
listed, all led to free info sites. All copyrights are those of the individual
Webmaster's for each site, so please respect them, especially for any articles
that may be listed. The purpose here is to share information readily available
on the web, not to rip off anyone.
Note
This page does
not yet reflect all the entries on the alphabetical list. If I ever catch up,
I will remove this message. But catching up on this list is NOT a real priority.

- Kodak

Airline Tickets
(see also Travel)
- Biztravel.com
is more for the biz traveler, as it helps with travel planning,
mileage tracking, wireless services and the like.
- Cheap
Tickets don't know how cheap this site is, but it is easy to use
- FareChase
is an easy-to-use price-comparison site that will scour as many as 20 sites
for cheap fares. Try this one first!
- LastMinuteTravel
says they are "your first stop whenever you need or want to travel on
short notice." These folks post under-booked flights the airlines are
trying to fill.
- Qixo
also surfs other travel sites, similar to FareChase, to provide you with a
list of the best fares. Note: this is reported to be very slow site at times.
- Travelocity
seems to a site that has their stuff together, although I haven't used their
services...yet.
Albums
- Albums,
Inc. (Albums for resale: sold only to professional
photographers)
- ArtZ
has one of those agonizingly slow and distracting Flash (?) sites that drive
me nuts (and I usually do enjoy Flash sites). In addition, there is a place
for your password. They do, however, have interesting tutorials about album
assembly. But it was too hard to really determine what their product line
was all about. Some say their product is good, but I
will probably never know.
- Art
Leather "the world's finest albums and folios" -- from
the site; includes Studio 2000 system for assemblage of wedding photo albums.
At least two wedding pros complained of poor service, and several others seemed
to concur. Caveat emptor.
- Cyprus
Albums has some nice stuff, but they want you to get hold of them
in order to get any pricing info. That's not my style, though I suppose it
gets rid of the riffraff (me).
- Daisy Arts
seem to have the most impressive collection that I have seen. Such apparent
fine quality workmanship should have a more impressive name, but this place
bears more than just a glance.
- Exposures
Online albums, frames, etc.
- FLAX
art & design has two very nice leather albums in an inexpensive,
do-it-yourself style.
- I
Nobili has handcrafted leather albums (absolutely
beautiful, from the pictures), with NO indication of price.
- Kolo
has unusual and inexpensive albums based on paper, cloth, leather
and more. The site looks interesting and promising.
- Leather
Craftsmen have handcrafted leather wedding albums.
- Molly
West Handbound Books are too flowery for my taste, but they look
good. While their prices are not listed, I looked this one up right after
I checked out Rag and Bone. This site is what R&B should
have been.
- Queensberry.com
is an Australian site with unique offerings, and one of the best sites to
analyze your needs to produce a unique product.
- Rag
and Bone Bindery creates handmade
books, but does not sell them on-line. They refer you to your local stationery
store ("we feel our books are best appreciated in person"--from
the site), who are not listed on the site (you can
call their toll-free number if you are really interested, but by this time,
I had lost interest). Except, of course,
Amazon.com, who, as we all know, makes physical browsing and hand-holding
an art. Prices, you ask? Well, if you have to ask... [they
are not listed]. While their product may be good (and I guess I will
never know), this is a classic example, in my opinion, of how not to
make a Web site. (But they are creating a new one, which will hopefully be
much improved.) They do have a wholesale service, accessible by [obnoxious,
but in this case probably necessary] password.
- Renaissance
by Album X was recommended by a working pro.
The selection looks simple enough to choose an album with little problem.
They did have a photographer's page that required a password to enter (always
a problem in my opinion). Their upscale album is called Renaissance
the book.
- Waterhouse
Books sell albums, but their Web site is not yet ready for the
big time. Perhaps it will develop to a more mature point with the passage
of time.
- Zookbinders
has photo albums dedicated to the digital shooter. But one would suspect that
everyone has this now.
Astronomical Calculations
There will be times when you want to know when the sun or moon
will rise, set or just where it will be in order to properly light your outdoor

Auctions

Automobiles
- Autoweb
allows you to research, purchase, finance, insure, etc. all
vehicles.
- CarBuyingTips.com

cars, auto leasing, and avoiding scams."--from the site (and that
is probably a pretty accurate statement.--ed.

- HowStuffWorks
this Website covers the basics of how a camera, and especially
an SLR, works. It is pretty elementary, but interesting nonetheless, especially
for those who are just beginning. From the Home
page, you can learn many other cool things, such as sword-making,
wine-making,
and other neat things.
Batteries
The current skinny:
I'm not sure alkali batteries exist any longer; NiCads are better, but have
a bad memory problem; NiMHs are very good, but seem to have a memory problem
and lose a charge just sitting there waiting to be used; Li-Ion are currently
the best available (no memory, long-lasting they like frequent recharges, last
a long time, etc.)
- Alternative
Wireless looks like a good place to purchase cell
phone accessories.
- Anton

off with that remark). Batteries for video cameras, etc.

a bookbinding company. The only problem, the Web site does not give a clue
to the cost involved. Contacting the Web site manager indicated price of $295
per basic book, plus $10 per image. Pricey, but probably worth it.
Books, CDs, etc.

- Calyptic
Creations will print full-size calendars of your photos for $22.00
(the first one). If you want 10-49 copies, it is down to $14 per calendar.
For multiple copies, this seems like the place. I may order one calendar and
see what it is like. If I do, I will post my thoughts here. They do not seem
to make uploading as easy as some places do, but you can send in your photos
and they will scan them for you (included in the price I believe).
- Kinko's
will print a Photo-A-Month calendar (8.5"x11" flip calendar) for
$20.
- Multi
Visual Products
Sports trading cards, magazine covers, Enhanced team prints, individual and
team calendars, magnets, and stickers. Reasonable prices and marketing tools.
Not as imaginative as Roox (below), but it seems to me to be a much friendlier
company.
- myPublisher.com
will publish a calendar for $25 (and a savings of $5 on additional copies,
although I'm not sure if that is $5 per additional copy or $5 off a bunch
of additional copies). In addition, they will publish a coffee table book
for $3/page (minimum of 10 pages, max of 50 pages).
- Photo-Calendars.com
will put together a calendar of several varieties. The best one is $25.50
for 12 different months (with additional copies at $19.50 each). They have
other styles at lesser prices.
- Photographer's
Edge turn photos
into greeting cards, postcards and calendars. If you want to produce limited
run items, using your own prints, these folks have elegant paper and designs
for you to just tape in your prints. You will have to write for their free
catalog (bummer if you want something right now!), but the Web site
will give you an idea of their product line. Recommended.
- Photoworks
has a full-size calendar
for $20 each. A super-size is available for $27.
- PrintingForLess
does not handle small quantities, but for large quantities, their prices seem
to be very good. Rumor on email lists say they do good work.
- Roox
Corporation
prints greeting cards, trading cards, biz cards and calendars. These folks
are the best of the bunch for photo printing, at least in my opinion.
But there are no prices, there is a $500 fee just to do business with them
for two years, and you have to contact somebody in person: no direct Web purchasing
without the $500 account. This is a place to get quality work done, but they
are a printing plant, not a supplier of products to use on the home computer.
Note: I recently tried to access this site and found a Korean site under
construction. Don't know what's going on. YMMV.
- shutterfly
will print a full-size calendar for $20 each.
Calipers
- Iconico
has free on-screen calipers, but by purchasing the $15 registered
program, the functionality of the calipers will be enhanced.
Camera Stores
Buying photo equipment via
mail order may be less than an exhilarating experience. I list many nationally
advertised stores here, mainly so I can check many places easily. I have personally
dealt with Adorama, B&H, Calumet, and Discount Video Warehouse. I have been
quite satisfied with the service from all of them.
The rest I cannot personally vouch for and would appreciate any feedback concerning
any experience you have had, either positive or negative.

HTML, DHTML
and other xMLs
When I first set up this
category, I used the term xML as a generic Markup Language reference. Now
it turns out that there is a new scripting language called eXtensible Markup
Language that really is called XML. When I first began to explore web
creation way back in the autumn of 1999, I found you could become basically
proficient in HTML in couple of hours. Since that time, I found that to really
do well, you also need to learn DHTML, JavaScript, Perl, Photoshop, and at
least become familiar with Java. Now they add XML.

Every web page has a links
page, and every links page has links to other links pages. So you can easily
get lost in chasing link after link after link, followed by wending through
page after page after page once you reach the site you were seeking. That
is pretty nonproductive time. On this page I have tried to cut through most
of that by setting up links to get close to my intended goal the first time.
It doesn't always work, but I am trying to make this page useful for myself
as well as anyone else who may wander onto this site. So why do I include

Novelty Items
- 4imprint
is not a photo novelty place, but rather a place
that will take computer drawn images (from CorelDRAW! primarily, but
a few other vector programs also) and imprint your image on just about anything
from cups to caps and sportswear to flashlights and portfolios, with a whole
lot of others thrown in. The fabric stuff is actually sewn in with up to 5
colors and 8000 stitches! A true commercial venture with minimum quantities.
- Crestline
is similar to 4imprint above. But it is different. For instance, I
couldn't find where they did embroidery. They also prefer Mac originals and
they accept only Photoshop from PCs. For me, that is not a problem, but it
may be limiting for others. (No PC vector programs!) I didn't really check
to see who had better prices. But the examples show that they also seem to
do quality work.
- Fossil
Graphics Corporation
fuses images onto resin for full-color signs and displays that are impervious
to moisture, UV light, extreme weather, bacteria, graffiti, scratching, vandalism,
etc.
- Imagination
Gallery This
is the most schizophrenic and vexing site you will ever come across, but at
the same time it is the most absolutely cool site for the owner of
a computer and inkjet printer. If you know what you are looking for, use the
built-in search function. If you don't, plan to spend a lot of time looking.
To help you, here are some of the products you can use to help you create
photo novelties using your computer and inkjet printer: 3-D

Doing it yourself is good for low-number productions. If you want to do high
volume, go to the commercial places. They are less expensive for big numbers.
- iprint
is the printing arm of 4print above. These folks do the BIG stuff.
- MAGco
Sports Photography Products
manufactures photo pennants, key chains, magnets, trophies, Wheaties photo
products, etc.
- Multi
Visual Products
Sports trading cards, magazine covers, Enhanced team prints, individual and
team calendars, magnets, and stickers. Reasonable prices and marketing tools.
Not as imaginative as Roox (below), but it seems to me to be a much friendlier
company.
- Neil

clocks for instant production with photographs
- Penn
Photomounts wedding albums; theme mounts for school, sports and
groups. Personally I think this is pretty dated stuff, but maybe it will change.
- PhotoStone
will print an image onto a travertine marble base.
- Romar
Company makes photo mats, postcard backs magnets, and captions
for photos. This place seems to me to be pretty progressive.
- Roox
Corporation prints greeting cards, trading cards, biz cards and
calendars. These folks are the best of the bunch for photo printing,
at least in my opinion. But there are no prices, there is a $500 fee just
to do business with them for two years, and you have to contact somebody in
person: no direct Web purchasing without the $500 account. This is a place
to get quality work done, but they are a printing plant, not a supplier of
products to use on the home computer.

There will be times as a photographer,

from different cultures, using different languages. This should help.

Vest, Photo
(see also Backpacks, belts, bags and cases)
mini-editorial: if you want to be part of the in-crowd and have
that cool, "photo-look," these vests are what you need. But three
caveats: 1. they are hot and they put a lot of weight unnecessarily and uncomfortably
on your shoulders. Belts [my preference] or backpacks are much better equipment
haulers; 2. where I live, people do not look at me and with my vest on and think
"Hey, an ultra-cool pro photographer," rather they say, "Hey,
going fishing?"; 3. they do make most of us look pretty dorky (IMHO).
- Adorama
has The
Photographer's Tuxedo Vest to store gear under your tux for those
formal affairs. When you get to their Web site, seek on "tux vest"
and ye will find all their sizes. These vests are actual tux vests (though
only Boring Black in color) that have had pockets added to carry your gear.
- Domke
has a Jacket/Vest and a photo vest available.
- Eagle
Industries make military and law enforcement vests
that have been used some photographers as photo vests. One BIG advantage seems
to be that the vest has an attached belt that somehow transfers much of the
weight to your hips. This is very desirable. With its military or tactical
look, I don't think I would wear this vest to photograph a hostage situation,
but I doubt if anyone would ask, "Hey, goin' fishin'?" Properly
modified, this may be the best of the bunch. Probably the best would be their
Load
Bearing vests, especially the Air
Rescue Vest. You can also purchase pouches from other suppliers, such
as Kinesisgear,
that will attach to the vest.
- Exofficio
has a khaki vest on sale (but who knows how long this link will be active.
If you open it after April, 2003, the price listed is probably the regular
price.
